About this talk

Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its sequel title Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 are large open-world story-driven historic RPGs with strong emphasis on detailed simulation of NPCs. This design direction comes with unique challenges for the navigation system. In this session Matej Marko presents how Warhorse studios have optimized the memory consumption of navigation mesh for the level size 4km x 4km. He also describes the combination of navigation mesh and navigation graph used in KCD games and shows how this approach allows for efficient pathfinding even for long distances and how it can be used to produce visually pleasing and natural paths.

Key Takeaways

1. Which navigation challenges are brought by detailed simulation of the NPCs in KCD and KCD2
2. Memory optimization tips for the recast and detour library
3. How the navigation system (in KCD and KCD2) combines navigation mesh and navigation graph
